Smart Home Routers are a hot topic
Smart Home Routers should be as they are the most important device driving your data during these times. What companies had the right timing and came out with a product right before our current situation? Let’s look into the companies that have the highest amount of sales at this time.
Google Nest WiFi Router
Don’t get this confused with Google WiFi. Google WiFi came out in 2016 with terrific results and then along came Google Nest WiFi in 2019. This is an excellent Mesh system that in short provides for faster speeds and is a very practical update to Google WiFi. They are mid to high priced, very easy to work with with better customizations than Google WiFi but not the best with customizations. There is a prioritization that really helps with bandwidth speeds to devices really needing it for 1-4 hours and then it resets back to unbiased broadband to all devices. If you have a home that is 2200 square feet or larger you may want to consider the optional “satellites” to fulfill your houses footprint and allow every room to have equal internet speeds.
Ubiquity Dream Machine Smart Home Router
This is the latest and greatest. The Dream Machine boasts:
- High‐Performance Dual Band 802.11ac 4×4 Wave 2 AP
- Managed 4-Port Gigabit Switch
- Advanced Security Gateway with IDS/IPS and DPI
- UniFi Network Controller with Intuitive User Interface
- Scalable Through Additional UniFi Devices Connected to LAN
- Powered by Fast 1.7 GHz Quad-Core Processor
In short, this system is the cream of the crop. It’s a high priced router with built in switch that will make you pay for it but you will not have buyer’s remorse. The “satellites” for the Dream Machine are available but only work through POE (Power over Ethernet). So if you are going to mesh this network make sure you have CAT5, or better yet, CAT6 Ethernet available to run to your satellite(s).
Netgear Orbi Router
One of the existing major players is throwing their “hat into the ring” for mesh dominance. The Netgear Orbi system is very simple to use and does provide the same broadband speeds as Google Nest WiFi and Ubiquity but does not allow for much customizations. If you want straight, simple, consistent home networking through your ISP, utilize this router. Like Google Nest WiFi it also has a built in speaker to accept some forms of communication like an Alexa, Google or Siri. The price point is similar to Google Nest WiFi.
What to do with or without a smart home?
The Ubiquity Dream Machine is built for Smart Home Automation and that is our pick, if you are lookingh to advance your smart home to smarter. Google Nest WiFi is second version and in our opinion a justified upgrade to Google WiFi. This is a solid router with easy to use basic features. Netgear Orbi is in the same smart state. It performs just how the Google Nest WiFi performs. These two are very similar. Keep in mind that the speaker function can be very useful or very annoying.
